Faces, emotion & story

Why the shocked-face thumbnail works — and how to use emotion without looking like everyone else.

Survive: a janitor with a mop chasing a player

Humans are wired to read faces before anything else. A clear expression tells players what it feels like to play your game.

Match the emotion to the genre

  • Horror: fear, a hidden threat, darkness with one bright point of interest.
  • Obby: panic, mid-jump, the floor disappearing.
  • Tycoon / simulator: greed and joy — huge rewards, piles of cash, rare pets.
  • Battle: determination and scale — one versus many, a giant boss.

Tell a micro-story

The best thumbnails imply what happens next. A character staring at something just out of frame, a monster behind an unaware player, a countdown at 1 — these create questions only playing can answer.

Prompt idea

"Kid looking back in terror, glowing red eyes behind them in a dark hallway, title 'DON'T LOOK'"

Nitro: two cars drifting with flames
